Tourism officials are anticipating the year to end with nearly 13 million visitors

Tourism officials are anticipating the year to end with nearly 13 million visitors. Andrés Aguilar Becerril, Under Secretary of Tourism Development at Gobierno del Estado Libre y Soberano de Quintana Roo, says current figures could dictate a high year end with tourists.

He says during the month of September and so far in October, there is a record 144,000 tourists in the state, despite the pandemic and the fact that historically, these two months are considered low season.

Hotel occupancy is expected to be between 65 and 70 percent. The only modification of going from a yellow to green covid light in this first stage is an increase in capacity,” he said.

Aguilar Becerril added that currently, the Mexican Caribbean has seen a 75 to 80 percent recovery in its tourism, with respect to figures of 2019. Current trends indicate the state will have a good end-of-year.

Darío Flota Ocampo, director of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ), stated that many hotels closed the low-season month of September with 50 and 60 percent occupancy rates.

People prefer to travel to safe destinations and that is why the Mexican Caribbean is expected to close with nearly 13 million in 2021,” he added.
