Playa Tortugas

“Tortugas” means “turtles,” so this beach gets its name from the ones that come to this coast every year. This spot is in Platanitos in the municipality of Compostela. Riviera Nayarit recommenda a visit in July, which is when they celebrate the turtle festival. It’s an ideal beach for nature lovers as it’s almost virgin. Here you can “eco-tourist” to your heart’s content while checking out the local flora and fauna.

Playa Punta Negra

Located on the southern end of Litibú near Punta de Mita, about 30 minutes from Nuevo Vallarta, this is another one of those expansive beaches with very few tourists. The sand here is soft and white, and the waves depend on the tides, though they’re usually pretty calm. The most amazing thing about it is the pristine, emerald green water. There isn’t a beach vendor in sight, so bring your own snacks and take your trash with you.

Playa Lo de Marcos

This destination is super chill and relaxed, with beaches surrounded by incredible natural landscapes that combine stately palms with craggy mountains. There’s plenty of room to roam, so you’ll have the beach practically to yourself. Plus, there are places to eat and paddleboards for rent—unless, of course, you just want to tool around in the calm water on your own. If you’re looking for adventure, head for the hiking trails in the hills and discover a couple of the even more hidden beaches like Minitas and Los Venados. The sunsets are epic, so you might bump into a few locals saying goodbye to another day in paradise.
