What to visit around Samana

Limon Waterfalls

Located in the province of Samana, in the heart of a majestic tropical forest, at an altitude of 360m, the Limon waterfall is one of the most beautiful and impressive waterfalls in the Dominican Republic.

The waterfall is rewarding, getting there is a whole adventure, but at the bottom of its rock of more than 40 meters high, covered with moss, a beautiful swimming hole with freshwater awaits the brave adventurers, who will get a massage under the powerful water jets that hide small caves.

It is rather early in the morning that Nicolas invites his little troop to explore this surprising place. You can do this trip either by horseback or donkey, but most of the time by foot with good shoes, to get as close as possible to the stunning nature. You will pass through a gentle jungle, walk on a tumultuous path surrounded by mango trees, banana trees, royal palms, cocoa trees, and coffee trees. After going across this peaceful environment, you will finally reach a breathtaking scenery.

Surprise, if came walking, you will return by another bucolic and more gentle path, along a small river. You will arrive at the ranch exhausted but happy, the backpackers will taste with great pleasure a succulent tropical meal.

Los Haitises National Park

Filled with emotion, bewitching, marvelous and mesmerizing, classified as a Unesco heritage, Los Haitises National Park is the true hidden gem of the Samana peninsula, and even of the Dominican Republic. It is also the favorite place of Nicolas, who will tell you with passion while navigating in the midst of wild landscapes, the story of the Indigenous (Tainos) who lived there hundreds of years ago. Their habitat, their fascinating caves that retain the imprint of their passage in the form of petroglyphs and other cave paintings.

Early in the morning, a bus will take you to Sanchez where you will get on board of a boat which will navigate its way through a magical setting for 3 hours, reminiscent of Halong Bay in Vietnam. You will witness hundreds of small islands/cays, a generous mangrove home of curious little crabs which prance on the giant roots of mangroves. You will also get to see the birds island, home of hundreds of pelicans, vultures, magnificent frigates and even a few moorhens or wild ducks –some species of which are endangered.

You will walk on the sacred ground of 3 impressive caves with walls covered with Indigenous petroglyphs and pictographs that Nicolas will be happy to tell you about. You will start off with a quiet and in-depth boat tour, which will give you time to observe, question, and catch the soul of this precious place.

Whale Watching in Samana

Every year, inexorably, from early January to late March, thousands of humpback whales come from the far north to the warm, calm waters of the Caribbean, to mate or give birth. And it is the Bay of Samana that they picked, considered one of the best places in the world to observe them.

It is a long journey of thousands of kilometers that the whales go through, most of the time mixing with momentary groups that quickly separate. These marine mammals weighing a dozen meters on average weighing up to 60 tons, breathe air as they regularly rise to the surface and then plunge again, sometimes breath-holding for up to 40 minutes.

It is a real pleasure and a rare emotion to see the mother whale playing with her baby next to the boat. As for the males… they know how to be tireless in seducing their lady and asserting their superiority. These gentlemen whales leap out of the water, leap, stand upright, or slap the surface of the water with their flippers to flirt with these ladies.

Males also sing songs that whales with their highly developed hearing (their primary sense) can hear up to 35 km.

An unforgettable experience full of emotion, an exceptional show just a few meters from the ship. In order not to miss out on this fabulous adventure, Nicolas, always so fascinated, will comment on each of their actions. Such a real pleasure!
