“We are open with eight percent capacity."

June 10 - After two days of reactivation, the Cancun International Airport reports both national and international flights landing. Airport managing company ASUR says on Monday, they saw 56 operations of which 22 were international to and from Philadelphia, Charlotte, Chicago, Houston, Miami and Dallas, in addition to a round-trip humanitarian flight from Grand Cayman Island.

Tuesday, the airport reported 45 operations. Cancun airport spokesman Eduardo Rivadeneyra reported that 23 arrivals and 22 departures were scheduled for Tuesday, which included 21 international operations to and from Buenos Aires, Charlotte, Chicago, Houston, Miami, Dallas and Montreal.

US airlines currently operating into Cancun include American Airlines, United Airlines and Sun Country, while Spirit has announced its return to the Cancun International Airport starting June 25. Spirit says they will begin with six routes and 11 weekly frequencies, which will increase to 36 in July when they start flying from Baltimore, Dallas, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Houston and Chicago.

Eduardo Rivadeneyra noted they are currently operating at around 20 percent, which is expected to gradually increase according to hotel reservations. On Monday, with the reactivation of state tourism, the Hotel Association of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres reported the opening of 39 hotels. They say the hotels are operating at 30 percent capacity as allowed under the current light system.

The association says that 22 of the reactivated hotels are in the center of Cancun and 17 in the tourist area. Ulises Guzmán Peregrina, head of the Cozumel Hotel Association says as of Monday, five accommodation centers on the island have resumed operations with a reduced occupancy and with strict sanitary protocols with the balance of affiliated hotels doing the same over the course of this month.

We are open with eight percent capacity. Staff are taking the appropriate sanitary measures to provide services to guests who have arrived,” he said. He noted that an increase in tourism is anticipated after an advertising campaign to attract national and international tourism.
