Simple Flying
Alaska Airlines now one of North America's largest, serving US, Mexico, and Bahamas

Alaska Airlinesis now one of the largest airlines in North America and has recently rolled outnew award charts, lowering the spending thresholdfor its Miles. While it mostly connects destinations on the American West Coast, it offers services across the United States and North American holiday destinations like Mexico and the Bahamas.

Members can earn and redeem Alaska Airlines Miles on many partner airlines (not only otheroneworldmembers). Members can leverage their Alaska Airlines Miles to fly not only across the US but also around the world.

oneworld Alliance partners

Alaska Airlines members can earn and redeem miles with all other members of oneworld. They can also enjoy Mileage Plan elite status (equivalent to oneworld tier levels Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald). Being a oneworld member gives the Mileage Plan a good deal of flexibility.

oneworld members:

  • American Airlines
  • Finnair
  • Qantas
  • Sri Lankan Airlines
  • British Airways
  • Iberia
  • Qatar Airways
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Japan Airlines
  • Royal Air Maroc
  • Fiji Airways
  • Malaysia Airlines
  • Royal Jordanian

While Alaska Airlines' Mileage Plan has experienced recent devaluations, its miles are still some of North America's most sought-after airline points. Members can redeem Alaska miles for a ticket and use their status with that partner's loyalty program (such asAmerican AAdvantage) for extra benefits. In other words, it is against the rules to redeem Alaska Airlines Miles points on American Airlines and then use American Airlines elite status for upgrades.

This is quite common in the industry. For example, American Airlines doesn't permit people to switch out their frequent flyer numbers for additional benefits. Simple Flying reached out to Alaska Airlines for comment and further clarification but has yet to receive a response.
