Historically, traffic jams on Mt. Everest has caused multiple deaths simultaneously. Great Tibet Tour would like to tell you some hidden truths about climbing this incredible mountain.

Sherpa

It should start with Sherpa. In the border areas of China and Nepal, there's a group of people called the Sherpa, who have lived as sheepherders at the foot of Mt. Everest for generations.

The Sherpa are known for being tour guides for the Everest Mountaineering team and they were born with the ability to climb. They have also witnessed the hardships and dangers of climbing.

Before You Can Climb

There are no more than 300 mountaineering places per year on the northern slope of China. The China Mountaineering Association conducts a strict review of the mountaineering qualification of each climber.

What are these qualifications?

You must have a 6,000-meter summit certificate to apply for a 7,000-meter climb. You can challenge 8,000 meters with a 7,000-meter Hilltop Certificate. You can climb Mount Everest after achieving the 8,000 meters summit certificate.

Misconcepctions

For the route to Mount Everest, there has always been a saying that "the north slope is more difficult than the south slope."

Actually, it’s wrong.

The difficulty of climbing from the north slope is mainly from 6,500 meters to the upper part and the second step at 8,680 meters. However, after 1,975 meters the Chinese mountaineering group has a metal ladder set up.

The difficulty of climbing the second step was relatively reduced because of this.

Although route on the northern slope looks worse than the south slope, with many ice rocks and tremendous winds, the probability of a sudden occurrence on the north slope is low. The ice-bound avalanches and rolling stones on the southern slope are rather difficult to predict so the threat to the lives of climbers would be even greater.

The Traffic Jams

Due to various restrictions and weather conditions, many climbers chose to climb to the top on May 22 and 23 in 2019 which caused traffic jams. Seven climbers died during the traffic jam in 2019.

If they chose to return back on the same way, they would have had a higher chance for survival. But between glory and life, most climbers choose the former.
